چکیده

We present some of our research activities dedicated to doped silica-based optical fibers, aiming at understanding the spectral properties of luminescent ions, such as rare-earth and transition metal elements. The influence of the local environment on dopants is extensively studied: energy transfer mechanisms between rare-earth ions, control of the valence state of Chromium ions, effect of the local phonon energy on Thulium ions emission efficiency and broadening of Erbium ions emission induced by oxide nanoparticles. Knowledge of these effects is essential for photonics applications. keywords optical fiber, silica, spectroscopy, rare-earths, transition metals, energy transfer, valence state, phonon energy, local environment Introduction During the last two decades, the development of sophisticated optical systems and devices based on fiber optics have benefited from the development of very performant optical fiber components. In particular, optical fibers doped with 'active' elements such as rare-earth (RE) ions have allowed the extremely fast development of optical telecommunications [i,ii], lasers [iii] industries and the development of temperature sensors [iv]. The most frequently used RE ions (Nd, Er, Yb, Tm) have applications in three main spectral windows: around 1, 1.5 and 2μm in fiber lasers and sensors based on absorption/fluorescence and around 1.5 μm for ha l-0 04 29 70 3, v er si on 1 9 N ov 2 00 9 Author manuscript, published in "Fiber and Integrated Optics 27, 6 (2008) 484-504" DOI : 10.1080/01468030802269746

Fabrication of polymer-SiO2 nanocomposite optical fibers with a new method

At first step polymer optical fibers (POFs) are used in short distance for optical data transmissions. At second step SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared by sonochemical-assisted method. Silica nanoparticles were added to polymer matrix to prepare polymer based nanocomposites. Most of the POF applications are in the medical and electrical devices. There are several methods for fabrication of POFs,...

Chiral nematic mesoporous films of ZrO₂:Eu³⁺: new luminescent materials.

Integration of luminescent rare earth ions and iridescence into a zirconium oxide photonic material is attractive for the design of new optical devices. The free-standing chiral nematic mesoporous films of ZrO2:Eu(3+) are assembled by a hard-templating approach using nanocrystalline cellulose-templated silica. The ZrO2:Eu(3+) films show tunable optical properties. The chiral nematic structured ...

Incorporation of Ln-Doped LaPO4 Nanocrystals as Luminescent Markers in Silica Nanoparticles

Lanthanide ions are promising for the labeling of silica nanoparticles with a specific luminescent fingerprint due to their sharp line emission at characteristic wavelengths. With the increasing use of silica nanoparticles in consumer products, it is important to label silica nanoparticles in order to trace the biodistribution, both in the environment and living organisms. In this work, we synth...

Fast-neutron radiation effects in a silica-core optical fiber studied by a CCD-camera spectrometer.

A simple CCD-camera spectrometer was deployed at the Los Alamos Spallation Radiation Effects Facility to characterize fast-neutron irradiation effects in several silica-based optical fibers over the wavelength range ~ 450-1100 nm. The experimental arrangement allowed optical loss spectra to be developed from remotely recovered frame grabs at various times during irradiation without it being nec...
